No Badge, No Booth: Two Days at the Canton Fair Gate

First, the rule that foreign buyers never hear about

With a foreign passport, getting into the Canton Fair is simple. You register, you collect the buyer badge, you walk in. Nobody asks how big your company is.

For a mainland Chinese company it is not simple. There are three legitimate ways in, and none of them is a counter you can queue at.

  • Exhibit. Rent a booth and take an exhibitor badge. We are not a manufacturer. A booth would have put us in the wrong hall, selling sourcing services to people who came to look at machines.
  • Domestic buyer badge. Invitation only, through a provincial trading group. The published requirement is roughly RMB 50 million of turnover in the previous 12 months, a business scope that matches the show's categories, and you cannot also be an exhibitor in the same session. The trading group reviews the file first, then you do an online pre-check. There is no way to apply on the day.
  • Companion of a foreign buyer. Filed online at least two days in advance, and you enter together, through the same gate, at the same time.

We went through all three in September 2026 and chose the pavement outside. It was a decision, not bad luck.

What those two days actually looked like

16 and 17 October, Phase 1. We were at the exit of Pazhou station from about 07:40, then along the walkway between the metro and the security check, where every buyer has to slow down.

Guangzhou was still hot. Security asked us to move on, more than once, and some of the printed leaflets we had brought were taken away. We are not going to dress that up. Standing outside a trade fair is not a comfortable way to do business.

What made it work is that the people walking past had just come out of the halls. They had spent the morning comparing machines, they were carrying catalogues, and a fair number of them had a problem they had not solved inside: a supplier who had stopped answering, a sample that did not match the bulk order, a first container they were nervous about paying for.

Who stopped, and what they buy

Buyers came past from Europe, Central Asia, the Middle East, South Asia and Africa. The categories were what you would expect in Phase 1: engineering vehicles, construction and processing machinery, hardware and building materials, everyday industrial goods.

Our opening line was never a pitch. It was: which country are you from, what are you buying, roughly what quantity, and when do you need it. If the answers were specific, we introduced ourselves properly. We are not a booth. We are the people who go to the factory for you.

What we could not do out there

This part matters if you are deciding whether an agent working outside the halls is any use to you.

We could not put your hand on a machine. We could not hear a spindle at working speed, compare two suppliers' welds side by side, or catch a technical manager at his own booth. We had no hall map and no exhibitor list beyond what is published.

So: if your job this week is to compare fifteen CNC builders in two days, go inside, and take someone who has a badge. If your problem is that you cannot come to Guangzhou at all, or you came and left with a bag of catalogues and no answers, the pavement is where we can help.

Two days, two numbers

By the evening of 17 October we had 50-odd WhatsApp and WeChat contacts and 40 physical business cards. Every one of them came out of a conversation in which the buyer described a purchase he actually intended to make.

We are not going to pretend that is a big number. It is two days, and one gate. What matters is what happens to those 40 cards next, and that is our ordinary work: go to the factory, get a real quotation against the spec, and tell the buyer what we found, including the parts he will not enjoy hearing.

If you were there and we missed each other

You do not have to wait for the 141st session. Send the product, the specification and the quantity. We will come back with the factories that actually build it, the questions worth asking them, and a price you can put next to whatever you were quoted this week.

And if you want to know how we charge before you send anything, that is a fair question to ask first. Twenty questions buyers put to us are answered in full on our FAQ and customer Q&A page, starting with “Why not go straight to the factory?” and “What am I actually paying for?”

Tell us what you are buying

Product, specification, quantity, destination port. That is enough for us to start, and we will tell you honestly if we are the wrong people for the job.

Send your requirement → Read the FAQ & customer Q&A →

Or write to sales@sumudu-cn.com / WhatsApp +86 185 7525 8123. A person answers, usually within one working day.
